Though I have litigated hundreds family disputes, I decided to pursue a new direction in 2000 after providing litigation services for over 22 years as a family law lawyer. Why? It had become increasingly clear that my goal of protecting the needs of families was best accomplished through the Collaborative Law process and through mediation.
My name is Maury White, and I have dedicated my law practice entirely to helping couples resolve family issues with dignity, respect and without the need for court battles. I am available to serve as a neutral mediator, using my skills as a communicator and problem solver to help couples navigate the sensitive issues involved in a divorce, and do so in a non-destructive, mutually respectful way.
What Is Mediation Really About?
Simply put, divorce mediation is about conflict resolution. We all experience conflicts in our lives everyday, and if it is ignored or pushed into the background, it can cause resentment and bitterness. The mediation process encourages a couple to confront the issues that make them uncomfortable. By getting problems out in the open and talking through them with the help of an impartial mediator, each spouse can grow and learn about what will make him or her happy in post-divorce life.
For couples with children, whether the couple is married or unmarried, mediation is also about sparing kids the hostility that is bred by the adversarial process. With a trained mediator facilitating discussions and pointing out possible solutions, the couple can resolve issues of:
What to Look for in a Mediator
Being a mediator and being a lawyer are two distinct roles, and it is important to understand that a mediator does not represent either party. Rather, a mediator facilitates communication and makes sure each party understands the position of the other, and that full information is available so that any decisions reached are meaningful and practical. At the end of mediation, you are free to have the agreement reviewed by your own attorney.

Impasse Mediation Services
There are sometimes instances where a divorcing couple, after attempts to work out various issues, becomes deadlocked, unable to negotiate further. These stalemates may occur between parties who lack experience in negotiations, but also may arise even if a professional negotiator or Collaborative lawyer is involved. If you and your spouse have reached such an "impasse," it may be time to consider what is known as impasse mediation.
Commonly, parties may have an agreement in place on many issues, but simply cannot work out a few final, important subjects. As an impasse mediator, I invite couples in this situation to come to me. My role is to review the progress of your negotiations, ask you to identify the reasons for the impasse, and then help you decide whether all the progress you've made is worth throwing away over one problematic issue. Usually, the answer is "no," and with this realization, we can move forward and reach a final compromise.
