MAURY WHITE: Ohio is an equitable division state. And that means equity to the Ohio courts is 50-50. And if you go to court, the court will take the house and divide the house equity in half, will take the retirement assets and divide those in half, will take the bank accounts and divide those in half so that each couple will have equal liquidity. In the collaborative process, we have the freedom to look at that inventory of assets as a whole. And we can balance and trade off and understand what's important to each spouse. In the collaborative process, we look at each one of these particular assets on their own merit and determine what value or what interest they are to each of the parties, whether it be a piece of real estate or whether it be a retirement fund or whether it be a business, those particular assets can be valued intrinsically in terms of what do they provide to the couple one way or the other. And those intrinsic values can lead the couple to divide their marital property in any creative way that meets their own particular needs so that we can possibly end up with a win-win situation in terms of what each person values. We have the freedom and the creativity and the time to address these in an orderly fashion with full transparency, with all the information you need to make an informed, intelligent decision.
