MAURY WHITE: The true equity in any marriage are the children, not the house, not the retirement plan. The true equity is the children. And that's the starting point for most collaborations because both parents are able to agree that they both want what's best for the children. People think that shared parenting means 50-50 time. Shared parenting does not mean 50-50 time. Shared parenting deals directly with who's going to make the decisions about the kids, whether the parents are going to share the responsibility for decision making about the issues that are important to the kids. If it's a sole custody situation, one parent makes the decision. If it's a shared parenting situation, both parents share the responsibility for making decisions about their kids. What are the decisions? The decisions are what doctor they're going to go to, what school they're going to go to. Who's going to buy the wardrobes in the spring and the fall? Whether you have shared parenting or whether you have sole custody, you're still going to have a parenting time schedule or a parenting time allocation that needs to be done. In situations of dissolution where you can agree, it's based upon the mom's schedule, the dad's schedule, and the kids' schedule and what works best for the family. That's what we do in collaborative is we talk about those issues.
